Puriri Poster

Last term Nga Rau Rangatira's topic was based around rongoa maori. We each had a partner and did some research on a rongoa we desired. My partner was Stevie and we researched the rongoa Puriri. I truly enjoyed finding information on this plant because it was a very new plant to me, I had never seen it before. I hope that someday I can make a puriri rongoa, but anyway this is my poster :)

Puriri-Rongoa Maori

This term Nga Rau Rangatira's topic had been based around Rongoa Maori. We are learning all about the different types of rongoa plants. We have learnt a lot of information about rongoa: The types of karakia to do before you pick it, how different types of rongoa plants help, and so many different things to do with rongoa maori

What is rongoa?

Rongoa is a traditional maori medicine made using the native plants of Aotearoa. Such as Kumarahou, Kawakawa, Tupakihi, Tataramoa, Korari/Harakeke and Manuka are the six main (most common) types of rongoa

What is puriri?

  Puriri is an endemic evergreen to New Zealand.

It's scientific name is a Vitex Lucens

A puriri is a forest tree, it has red berries 

and shiny green leaves. A lot of plants in New Zealand 

have white or green flowers. The tubular flowers 

on the puriri look like snapdragon flowers.

Medicinal Properties

Boiled leaves are used to make a drink.

 It is good for treating ulcers and the boiled

 leaves are used to treat strains 

and backache. It is also used internally 

to cure sore throats.

Maori Tense

This week Nga Rau Rangatira learnt how to do tenses, because we are a Maori unit we have done our tense ins te reo. We have done the tenses about what we have learnt this week. Here are my sentences:
Wamua, Past
Kua ako matou te rongoa maori, We learnt about rongoa maori.
I tuhituhi au ki roto i taku pukapuka, I wrote in my book

Watu, Present
Kei te kaukau ratou i roto i te wai, They are swimming in the water
E waiata ana au ki te kura, I am singing to the school

Waheke, Future 
Ka takoro matou te netipaoro, We will play netball
Ka haere korua ki te pamu, You two will go to the farm
